Jamie - Your piano teacher
A recent graduate from the University of Huddersfield with first class honours in music (BMus) and recipient of the Jacob’s Prize for a Musicologist for work on Schenkerian analysis, I offer engaging and dynamic lessons for piano that integrate music theory throughout the curriculum. At university I studied solo performance on the piano and was an active performer on double bass in four university ensembles. I previously held the position as organist for St. Edward's Church, Cheddleton. I believe in a careful balance of establishing a solid foundation for learning by consistently checking for understanding, whilst also pushing forward with regular sight-reading exercises. I advocate for learning a wide breadth of repertoire including teaching technique using sections of a pieces with a higher difficulty. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and I look forward to working with you.

Piano lessons at a glance
For beginners, I teach by establishing a basic understanding of music theory, before introducing students to short melodies where they can identify and apply what they have learnt. I aim to start beginner students on the kind of music they want to play (e.g. classical, baroque, romantic, film & videogame, pop, contemporary) as soon as feasible so they can play the music they like to listen to. For those who already have experience with piano, I make sure to discuss and fully understand what the long-term goals of the lessons are, as well as what material they wish to learn and how would be the best way to approach it. This includes learning the tools to continue independent learning on unfamiliar music. To aid learning, I use online Music Theory and note, chord and interval identification tools, as well as metronomes where necessary.
