Karen - Your piano teacher

Hello, my name is Karen Karner, and I would love to be your piano tutor. With over 20 years of experience teaching piano, I bring both passion and proven expertise to every lesson. I hold both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree, and I combine my academic background with decades of hands-on teaching to help students grow confidently and successfully. I teach through a structured method to ensure steady and measurable progress, and my favorite series to use is Piano Adventures. In addition to developing strong reading and technical skills, I incorporate music theory into every lesson and can include chord theory for students who want a deeper understanding of harmony and composition. I am comfortable teaching complete beginners who are just starting their musical journey, as well as advanced students preparing for performances. I understand what it takes to refine artistry, technique, and stage confidence. I can also play by ear and teach improvisation, helping students unlock creativity alongside traditional training. Every student learns differently, so I adapt to your individual learning style, whether you prefer lessons on a keyboard or an acoustic piano. My goal is not only to help you play the piano well, but to help you truly enjoy and understand music. I would be honored to guide you in reaching your musical goals.

Piano lessons at a glance

My teaching method is structured, clear, and intentionally progressive so that students build strong, lasting skills from the very beginning. I primarily teach through a method-based approach, and my favorite series is Piano Adventures because it carefully integrates technique, reading, rhythm, artistry, and theory in a logical sequence. This ensures that students are not just memorizing notes, but truly understanding how music works. We would both have copies of the same method books so we can work directly from the score together during each lesson. As we go through each piece, I break it down step by step. I explain how to identify patterns, key signatures, intervals, and chord structures before even playing. We discuss rhythm, counting strategies, articulation, phrasing, and dynamics so students understand how to shape the music musically, not just mechanically. I demonstrate effective practice techniques such as practicing hands separately, isolating difficult measures, using slow practice with steady counting, and gradually building tempo with control and accuracy. Music theory is woven naturally into every lesson. If desired, I expand further into chord theory so students can recognize harmonic progressions, play from lead sheets, and develop stronger accompaniment skills. Because I can play by ear, I also incorporate ear training and improvisation, helping students connect what they hear with what they play.
