Matthew - Your piano teacher

I'm Matt Louis, and I have just over 8 years of experience teaching music. The ages of the people I have taught range from elementary school students to adults at varying skill levels, from beginners to more advanced. I have extensive experience teaching piano, guitar, bass, and percussion, as well as the theory that applies to each instrument. When I am teaching younger people, students especially, I make sure to emphasize the importance of becoming familiar with the fundamentals of the instrument, such as hand placement and pedaling techniques, so we can slowly work towards covering new ground, eventually introducing music theory to the lessons over time. I also teach basic musical skills to the lessons that apply to any instrument, such as sight-reading and ear training. Having graduated from SUNY Oneonta under their Music Industry major, I have firsthand experience with what it means to be a great music teacher, and I look forward to doing the same with my own students!

Piano lessons at a glance

When it comes to teaching lessons for the piano, as well as any other instrument, I make myself flexible and adapt to each student individually, tailoring each lesson to their specific aspirations with the instrument. When I begin lessons with a new student, depending on their skill level, I assign one or two tasks per week to see how they do and where their level of interest lies. After a few weeks, I usually have an understanding of the way the particular student learns and what their goals with the instrument are, so I can continue to tailor the lessons to the student as their experience and skills develop. When I teach beginners, I always begin by teaching note values and rhythm before delving into anything tonal, such as scales. Once the student is engaged in a regular practice routine and is familiar with proper hand placement and rhythm, then I introduce theory to the lessons. My teaching style is always supportive. I always make sure to remember that I was once a beginner as well, and I know how daunting learning an instrument is. My mission as an instructor is to provide my students with the skills and knowledge to achieve their musical goals.
