My tutor approach depends heavily on the student, what they wish to learn, and how they best learn. Generally, I focus on learning the fundamentals necessary to later move on to learning pieces/songs. These fundamentals include basic music theory such as learning rhythm and tempo, ear training, and scales and arpeggios. After building these techniques, I start to incorporate a simple song that exercises these techniques. Classes still start warming up with these technique exercises, but students now have the opportunity to apply them to a real piece. I use a mix of metronome and MuseScore to familiarize students with the piece, taking them through sight-reading and coaching along the way. I teach them the correct fingering, tone, and dynamics of the piece, and how to best show these elements in their playing. My methodology lies in setting small goals that excite students to learn more and enhance their skills while fostering a love for music.
