I'm João Neves, a guitar tutor with over 8 years of experience teaching. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Music, with a specialization in Electronic Music and Music Production. This brings a range of unconventional techniques to my guitar playing, allowing me to take advantage of effects and manipulate audio in expressive ways. I build most of my guitars with built-in MIDI controllers, etc., that allow me to explore these sonic expressive paths. I also play a lot of other instruments, such as synthesizers, bass and a few weird things. I love to explore music and sound. I like to make my lessons fit better with the students' types and interests. I try mostly to bring some music theory over, since I believe that opens the way for the students to find their way to enrich their guitar playing, going through complex chords, scales, modes, you name it. I adapt my tutoring to the needs of the students. First of all, I want the students to feel comfortable with me, and for that, I try to adapt the process of learning to every single student. Quite often, I attempt to introduce some new technique or some new theory, but if I feel that the students are not prepared or if they tell me that, I try to strip down the subject matter to make it easier to "digest" and turn the process of learning as effortless as possible. That always depends on the student. Regardless of the level of a student, there's always something new that can be learn, being simply the basic chords for beginners, to complex chords for intermediate players, or how to sculpt their sound for more advanced students. Most importantly that anything, I want the students to be able to express themselves on their guitar playing as fast as possible. With over 20 students taught or currently teaching, my methodology fosters a love for music and musical expressiveness and empowers learners in their music journey.
