Instead of just solving a^2 + b^2 = c^2, I bring math to life by showing how it governs physical space

My name is Shahnaz Sepehrband and I teach Math and Biology for more than 16 years in different level of education. I am a dedicated and results-oriented Mathematics and Biology Educator with over 16 years of experience in fostering academic excellence within the Individual Science Research (ISR) framework. Expert at synthesizing complex quantitative data with biological systems to create a multidisciplinary learning environment. stablished the school’s first competitive Science Fair club, which grew from five members to a premier extracurricular program within three years. Designed and implemented hands-on laboratory experiments that utilized mathematical modeling to predict phenotypic ratios in genetics units. I foster a classroom culture where mistakes are celebrated as data points. This psychological safety allows students to tackle complex problems without the fear of being "wrong".

This is my signature approach. I treat Math and Biology as a single language rather than isolated silos. I use biological phenomena to teach mathematical concepts (e.g., using population genetics to teach probability). Students stop asking "When will I use this?" because the math becomes the essential tool for solving the biological mystery. I move students from the concrete to the abstract using a three-step journey: The Hook: A real-world biological problem (e.g., "How does a virus spread through a city?"). The Tool: The mathematical formula or theorem required to model it. The Application: Students use the tool to solve the problem, cementing the logic in their minds. I recognize that "Math Anxiety" is a barrier to scientific success. So I create a classroom where mistakes are viewed as "experimental data" rather than failures. Therefore by gamifying complex problem-solving (Math Olympiads, Escape Rooms), I lower the affective filter and increase student "buy-in."
