Matt - Know your tutor

Hi! My name is Matt Byars and I am tutor at Wiingy. I graduated from Loyola University Chicago. I have a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education with an Emphasis in Mathematics. I have a PEL (Professional Educator's License) in the state of Illinois. I did my student teaching from 2020-2021 during Covid. All of my student teaching was done completely online or hybrid. I am well equipped to teach in an online capacity. In regards to my teaching style, I like to gauge how the student learns best. Then, I tailor my teaching style to the student. Personally, I have found that the best way to help a student is by the following. First, see where they are at in their studies by having the students send the material they want to learn or are struggling with. Then, I can create a lesson to help the student learn that material. Or, if they are having trouble only with one problem, They can send me the specific problem directly.

Class overview

My teaching approach begins with getting to know my students before formal instruction starts. I believe that students are more receptive when they feel heard, so I make it a priority to listen to them first. Before each lesson, I assess the student’s current level of understanding through a pre-assessment. Using those results, I design lesson plans that are appropriately challenging and encourage the student to progress to the next level. Throughout instruction, I pay close attention to the learning styles that work best for each student—whether visual, auditory, or a combination of both. I also place strong emphasis on understanding students’ personal interests and incorporating them into lessons whenever possible. This not only makes learning more enjoyable but also increases engagement, which is especially important in maintaining students’ attention for longer periods of time.
