I am Olive Bernstein, a piano teacher with over 2 years of experience teaching students of all ages. From true beginners to intermediate piano students, I am here to help you reach new heights as a pianist by teaching you valuable foundations such as finger placement, sight reading, scales, arpeggios, rhythm, and the basics of music theory. From there, the possibilities are endless! We will dive into chord theory, improvisation, self-accompaniment and the wonderful world of piano music from classical to contemporary. My teaching method is centered around creative and expressive musicality, integrating necessary skills like site reading and the foundations of music theory to provide progressive instruction tailored to each student's needs. I come from a classical piano background and now play with a singer-songwriter focus. My teaching style honors both classical foundations and stylistic innovation for those students who want to explore composition and songwriting. I engage students in interactive online learning experiences using a variety of tools such as live-scroll chord charts, interactive sheet music and online quiz platforms such as Quizlet for memorization of theoretical concepts and vocabulary. As your tutor, my aim is to foster a deep understanding of and passion for music, ensuring your continuous growth and success.

Piano concepts taught by Olive
The session focused on vocal warm-ups and exercises to improve breath support, vocal range, and pitch accuracy. The student worked on connecting breath to voice, transitioning between vocal ranges, and applying these techniques to a song. Ear training exercises were introduced to improve pitch matching skills, and the tutor suggested practicing vocal sirens and breathing exercises as homework.

The Student reviewed note locations and practiced Carol of the Bells, then learned a new E major scale ending. The Student also began learning Jingle Bells, associating notes with lyrics. The Tutor plans to continue teaching Jingle Bells and practicing Carol of the Bells in the next session.

The Student and Tutor worked on vocal warm-up exercises including breathing techniques and vocal sirens and began to apply these to a selected song. They focused on breath control, vowel modification, and achieving proper vocal placement in different registers. A playlist of songs for future lessons was created, spanning various genres and difficulty levels, and the Student was assigned breathing and siren exercises as practice.
