Hello, my name is Emilie Illsley. I am a vocalist, composer and tutor who has recently graduated from the Folk, Roots and Blues degree at Leeds Conservatoire. I have also taken my singing exams all the way up to Grade 8 and have my Grade 5 Music theory. Due to this and my vast musical experience, I am able to take students through their singing grades should they wish but will tailor my lessons to you own personal needs and wishes. I have a relaxed teaching approach designed to help build confidence, strengthen vocal ability, as well as improve musicianship and theoretical knowledge. I feel as though it is very important to allow your own individual natural sound to shine so will never try to mould your voice into something else. I specialise in Folk, Classical, Musical Theatre and Contemporary singing but am happy to explore any genres that you re interested in. I work largely with sheet music and strongly encourage all to learn how to read it and will gladly help with this but am also happy to use mixed resources for learning. My methodology - I take a calm, relaxed, and encouraging approach to teaching, with the goal of helping students grow in confidence while steadily strengthening their vocal technique and developing a deeper understanding of musicianship and music theory. I believe every singer has a natural, authentic sound that should be pushes forward, so I never try to force anyone into a style or tone that doesn’t feel true to them. Although I specialise in Folk, Classical, Musical Theatre, and Contemporary singing, I’m always enthusiastic about exploring any genre that excites or inspires you. I work mainly with sheet music and highly encourage students to learn how to read it, but I’m also very happy to incorporate mixed resources, alternative materials, and personalised methods to support different learning styles and musical goals.
