Hello, I am Chaitanya Kulkarni, and I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics. I enjoy teaching Mathematics along with pursuing research. I have experience tutoring both one-on-one and in group settings, and I have also mentored semester long projects in advanced mathematics. I find great joy in explaining mathematical concepts, especially when the explanation truly reaches the student much like the joy I felt when I first understood many foundational definitions in mathematics. In my teaching, I focus on examples and counterexamples, as they help in building strong intuition. I prefer giving quizzes based on the definitions and theorems covered in class, rather than very difficult problems. This helps students stay on track and better follow the subsequent lectures, as I believe quizzes should guide students back to the core ideas rather than overwhelm them.

My approach to teaching Mathematics is centered on an appreciation for the subject’s abstract nature and the logical reasoning behind it. The satisfaction I get after explaining an abstract definition to a class of students is gratifying. At the beginning of a lecture, I prefer to provide a brief review of the material covered in the previous class. This allows students to transition smoothly for grasping new concepts. Furthermore, I believe that several practices make the teaching more clear. These include effective use of the chalkboard, maintaining consistency in the use of notations, ensuring a flow of the subject, periodic summarization of previously covered content, and an outline of upcoming topics in subsequent classes. In addition, providing students with well-organized notes and, if possible, making them accessible through a dedicated webpage helps the learning process.
