Jonathon - Get to know your vocal coach
With over 10 years of professional singing experience, earning my Master's Degree in Vocal Performance at North Park University, Jonathon Joseph Larson is an excellent vocal coach and teacher. From Pop to Classical to Rock, all musical interests are welcome in the vocal studio. In my personalized lessons, we focus on the Bel Canto Technique. Bel Canto (or Beautiful Singing) is the basis for most western singing, whether that be Pop or Opera. All students, from beginner to advanced learners, will focus on the structural basis of Bel Canto, focusing our breath and using this to produce a sound unique to you. Singing is very personal and no two journeys are a like, so the studio is a safe space for expression and experimentation. Lessons will also work to improve your rhythm, sight singing, performance techniques, and confidence. Book your lesson today, and start to explore your voice!

Singing concepts taught by Jonathon
Student and Tutor selected "Caro Mio Ben" as the next song to work on. The session focused on Italian pronunciation for the chosen piece, with the Tutor guiding the Student through phonetic spellings. The Student was assigned homework to perform a word-for-word translation of the song's lyrics and to practice the pronunciation for their next lesson in two weeks.

Holistic Practice for Italian Repertoire
The Art of Word-for-Word Translation
Strategic Song Selection for Vocalists
The session focused on developing the Student's vocal technique, beginning with a discussion on managing performance anxiety when incorporating new skills. The Student practiced breath support exercises, including 'dog pants' and sustaining vowels, with particular attention to 'breathing in the vowel' and proper tongue placement for vowel formation. The Tutor assigned continued practice of the four-breath intake followed by vowel sustain using an open jaw, and provided a video resource to aid understanding of internal vocal mechanics, with plans to transition to song work in future lessons.
Performance vs. Practice Mindset
Optimal Singing Posture
Dog Pants & "Inner Tube" Breath Support
Breathing in the Vowel
Vowel Formation: Tongue as Primary Articulator
Romance Language Vowels vs. English Vowels
Student and Tutor focused on foundational singing techniques, including breath control, posture, and vocal production. They practiced the "dog pants" exercise for abdominal breathing, sustained "Ah" vowels to improve breath duration and consistency, and a new "breathe in the vowel" exercise to encourage an open throat. The Student received feedback on maintaining neck and shoulder relaxation, avoiding premature jaw closure, and connecting notes smoothly. For follow-up, the Student was assigned to practice with a metronome and piano, and to listen to five opera songs to select one for future lessons.

Relaxed Neck and Jaw for Clear Tone
Sustaining Breath Pressure with Body Independence
Breathing in the Vowel for Openness
Seamless Phrasing & Consistent Vocal Tract
Natural Voice Production and Vocal Health
The session was an introductory voice lesson focusing on the Belcanto method. The Student practiced foundational vocal techniques, including posture and breath support through exercises like the "dog pant," and began working on pitch matching. They discussed a future lesson plan centered on healthy vocal development for musical theater, including preparation for an upcoming audition.

Vocal Health and Long-Term Development
The Student and Tutor focused on fundamental singing techniques, specifically practicing breathing exercises for breath support and control, alongside proper singing posture. The Student performed exercises like 'dog pants' and controlled inhalations/exhalations with both hissing and 'a' vowel sounds, exploring their vocal range. The Tutor assigned these three breathing exercises for daily practice and encouraged their application to challenging song lines.

The Student and Tutor engaged in a singing lesson focusing on breath control, vocal warm-ups, and pitch accuracy. They practiced sustained breathing exercises and solfège patterns across various registers, with specific attention paid to proper vowel formation for optimal resonance. The session concluded with a discussion about future song selections, prioritizing classical Italian pieces to further develop Bel Canto technique.
