Sean - Know your guitar teacher

I'm Sean Bauer, a New York City based guitarist with over 10 years of experience teaching students of all levels and performing professionally. I have performed at concert halls, weddings, cruise ships, jazz clubs, restaurants, bars, and private events throughout my musical career. My specialty is your specialty. My approach to teaching guitar is individualized and depends on the unique goals of each student. With beginner students I tend to focus on more foundational parts of playing such as open chords, easy but fun riffs, major and pentatonic scales, and building a solid technique. However, I understand that many guitarists who have been studying for some time struggle to break out of certain musical plateaus. Whether you feel limited in regards to understanding of harmony and music theory, lack of fluency improvising with modes, or are a rock guitarist trying to expand your playing to other styles like Jazz and fusion, I always love to guide artists with information and approaches to practicing that allow one to overcome that plateau.

Guitar lessons quick guide

My teaching integrates a combination of repertoire based study, fretboard understanding, reading music, and technical development. I believe the objective of guitar study is to reach the ultimate goal of performance. Knowledge of the fretboard, strong technical foundation, developing ones ears, and the ability to read are all a means to cultivating an ability to learn efficiently and to perform music with confidence. I have students learn music by ear but also through notation as I believe they are both important skills. To develop ones aural musicianship, I focus on ear training exercises such as interval recognition, chord identification, and much more. These exercises will help guitarists be able to figure out how to play songs and learn riffs and solos with ease. This type of study along with fretboard and theory knowledge will also help guitarists who want to build their improvisational chops.
