James - Your piano teacher
Hi! I’m James, a pianist and trumpet player who graduated from the RWCMD on the jazz course. I have worked with children of different ages and abilities — from complete beginners to those preparing for graded exams. My experiences in teaching involve teaching an A-level class about Haydn, teaching a class about African drumming, teaching multiple pupils piano, and incorporating jazz into that learning. My lessons are fun, supportive, and tailored to each child’s learning style. I focus on helping students build confidence, develop good technique, and enjoy the process of making music. Alongside piano playing, I include elements of music theory, rhythm, and creativity to keep lessons engaging and well-rounded. As a performer, I’ve played at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and bring that same passion and musicality into my teaching. I love seeing students grow in both skill and enjoyment, and I aim to make every lesson something they look forward to!
James graduated from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

Piano lessons at a glance
My teaching blends fun, structure, and clear goals to help children develop confidence and skill at the piano. Each lesson is tailored to the pupil’s age, ability, and interests: we begin with warm-ups to build technique, posture, and rhythm, then work on carefully chosen pieces, sight-reading exercises, and short aural or theory activities. I encourage creativity through improvisation, composition, and exploring different musical styles. I set achievable short- and long-term goals, monitor progress with informal reviews, and provide practical, age-appropriate practice guidance for home. I use graded repertoire, games, listening examples, and engaging exercises to reinforce musical understanding. Open communication with parents ensures lessons are supportive, motivating, and enjoyable, helping each child develop both confidence and a lasting love of music.

The Tutor also provided a simplified version of 'Just the Way You Are' for the Student to practice.
