Aegean - Violin teacher
Hi! I’m Aegean :) I come from a musical family, so classical music has always been a part of my life. I began playing the violin at the age of 5. I later studied at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), where I received comprehensive training in violin performance, theory, and orchestral playing. During my time in Hong Kong, I participated in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival as a solo violinist, where I was awarded 2nd Place. I also had the privilege to serve as the principal violinist in all the schools I’ve attended, performing in orchestras that took part in international music festivals around the world, including at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. I started tutoring violin when I was 16, both in and outside of school, and have since explored other areas of education, such as outdoor education and SEN language tutoring. Through all these experiences, I’ve realised that my true passion lies in what I began with - this 4 stringed instrument I’ve had a lifelong love-hate relationship with. It’s intimate, challenging, and endlessly rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I find teaching incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about playing the right notes and rhythms, but about building connections, sharing joy, and helping each student grow at their own pace to become the best version of themselves. So whether you’re picking up the violin for fun or aiming for your next ABRSM exam, I’ve got you! 🎶 Music is cathartic. It’s a language of emotion, one that connects us, heals us, and reminds us that we’re alive. (Sorry that was a bit cheesy)

Violin lessons overview
My teaching approach is flexible and student-centred. I adapt to what you want from the violin. Some students prefer following the Suzuki or ABRSM syllabus, while others simply want to pick a song/ piece they love and learn it for fun. Whatever your goals are, we’ll build a plan together that suits your pace, interests, and ambitions, because every musical path is equally valid. For general violin learning, we’ll usually follow a standard structure that keeps lessons balanced and progressive: 🎻 Warm-up & Technique: scales, arpeggios, double stops, bowing and finger exercises. 🎶 Etudes & Studies: to strengthen specific techniques and prepare for more complex pieces. 🌟 Main Piece or Repertoire: either your chosen song/piece or exam pieces (ABRSM/Trinity). If you’re working toward exams, we’ll focus on the pieces, sight-reading, scales, and aural training required for your grade. If you’re learning casually, we’ll explore pieces that inspire you...film music, classical favourites, or anything that makes you excited to pick up the violin. Above all, I aim to make lessons engaging, encouraging, and personal. Technique is important, but so is joy, because progress feels best when you’re genuinely connected to the music you play. Otherwise, why do it?

The Student and Tutor focused on refining violin techniques through several exercises and pieces. They practiced bowing techniques for legato playing, precise finger placement (especially the pinky), accurate rhythm through vocal counting, and delicate harmonic execution. Homework was assigned to continue practicing existing exercises with specific technical adjustments and to begin sight-reading a new piece.

The Student and Tutor worked on violin technique and music transcription. They practiced open string exercises focusing on bow control and smoothness, incorporating double stops. The Student also refined a piece (Walton Stair Variation 1), receiving targeted feedback on bowing angle, pressure, and left-hand fingering. The session concluded with transcribing a Rohan piece from a video, notating rhythms and discussing bowing strategies. Homework includes reviewing the second half of the Walton Stair Variation 1 and practicing the transcribed Rohan piece.
