I graduated from the University of Washington in 1996 and traveled across the state to join the ranks of our "arch enemy" at Washington State University for graduate school in Speech-Language Pathology, completing my masters degree in 1998. It wasn't until about 2010 that I realized I have always been a coach. In middle school, I was a peer coach. In high school, I volunteered as a counselor at a nature conservation camp for 5th and 6th graders. In college, I began coaching football at the high school level. My studies lead me to working with elementary and secondary school students focusing on speech and language development. In early 2019, I began teaching ESL (English as a 2nd language) online to students based primarily in China. Later that summer, with high demand in North America, I quickly transitioned to online tutoring in English and Math tutoring. The need for middle school writing and math help was off the charts. Since then, I have been working full time with students from 5th grade through college age. I love working on essay writing and editing, standardized test prep, pre-algebra, algebra and geometry. However, many of my students come to me with whatever subject is causing them anxiety in the moment! I absolutely LOVE teaching math. It's numbers that really show a young person's mind at work. My passion is helping others succeed. When the light goes on in a young person's mind, it brings a huge smile to my face. I simply love coaching others to success. In my spare time, I enjoy reading spy novels, cycling and watching sports. Go Mariners! (apologies to the Astros fans out there- I currently tutor 3 of em and they hate me ;-)

SAT prep snapshot
My approach to nearly all subjects is threefold: 1) what is your class working on now? 2) where is the class headed next? 3) what previously learned concepts are still causing problems? I love to tackle each of these 3 in every hour-long session. That's not always possible, but we do our best together. And that means you are communicating with me throughout the week. Yes, sometimes, we'll meet for 5 minutes to go over 1 problem. Sometimes you'll text me with a problem and I can help by answering via text. But most of our successes will occur during our weekly (and hopefully bi-weekly!) sessions. I'll demonstrate. You'll copy. We'll practice. If you need concrete examples, I'll use concrete examples. If you work better through memorization, we'll use memory strategies to get you there. Know this! If I'm not seeing progress, I'll be working behind the scenes, between sessions to prepare myself to better help you. Let's do this!
