Luis - Know your guitar teacher

With over 10 years of experience as a guitar tutor through McFarland Park & Recreation and my own freelance teaching, I’ve had the privilege of working with students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. My time at McFarland taught me how to create structured yet fun lesson plans for groups and individuals, while freelance tutoring allowed me to deeply personalize each student’s learning journey. My teaching style is patient, adaptable, and goal-oriented. Whether a student wants to strum their first open chords, master fingerstyle patterns, build soloing skills, or understand music theory in a practical way, I meet them where they are. I believe music should be joyful, not intimidating. That’s why I focus on breaking down complex ideas into simple, bite-sized steps — using songs my students actually love to keep motivation high. I teach acoustic, classical, and electric guitar, covering everything from basic chord progressions and rhythm training to advanced techniques like alternate picking, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and improvisation. For younger learners, I use games and visual aids to build coordination and confidence. For teens and adults, we dive into their favorite genres — rock, pop, folk, blues, or classical — while steadily growing their musical foundation. Above all, I create a supportive, low-pressure environment where mistakes are just part of the process. My students leave each lesson not only better guitarists, but more excited to play. Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or getting back into it after years away, I’d love to help you find your sound.

Guitar concepts taught by Luis

The tutor introduced the student to the foundational concepts of playing piano chords, specifically focusing on the C major, A minor, G major, and F major chords. They practiced forming these chords and understanding how chord shapes can be moved across the keyboard to create different harmonies, with the goal of enabling the student to play a wide range of popular songs. The tutor encouraged continued exploration and practice of these chords.
