Singing lessons highlights
I utilize a sensations-based approach to teaching voice. I really want my students to focus on what they're feeling in their bodies while they're singing (what does it feel like to take a deep breath? can you feel your ribcage expanding? where do you feel resonance in your head? do you feel tension in your tongue or jaw? what does it feel like to sing with good alignment and minimal tension?) Isolating and describing these sensations makes them easy for my students to replicate when they're practicing on their own. It's easy to sing well in a lesson when the teacher is there to guide you, but much harder when you're on your own and have to trust that you remember what it felt like to "get it right" in a lesson. I also emphasize music theory and aural skills, giving my students the tools to learn music efficiently and accurately, as well as performance practice and style, allowing them to understand the idioms and characteristics of everything from Gregorian chant to contemporary Broadway.

Sophia worked with Josh during a vocal lesson, concentrating on improving his vowel pronunciation and breath control. She also introduced solfège as a method for learning music. Josh diligently practiced maintaining consistent breath support, applying this technique to singing vowel sequences and a hymn. For his practice during the week, Sophia assigned Josh to continue working on the hymn using solfège.

Sophia worked with a Charlotte resident on vocal techniques, including lip trills, legato, breath control, and expanding vocal range, with a focus on transitioning between head and chest voice. The learner also began sight-reading "Amarilli, mia bella" by Caccini. For the next lesson, they were assigned to listen to the recording of the song while following along with the sheet music and learn the first section.

Sophia coached an individual on vocal techniques, covering breathing exercises, legato singing, and pitch control. The learner, who resides in Sacramento, practiced descending notes, octaves, and intervals. They also began working on the hymn 'Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,' focusing on proper vowel placement and rhythm. For homework, the individual was assigned to listen to the hymn while following along with the sheet music, circling the tonic note (G).
