Mark - Your piano teacher
Hi, I'm Mark Perera. I'm a classically trained pianist, with an ARCT certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music. I've been regularly performing for concerts, churches, local events, and funerals for the last 15 years. My lessons are open to all, welcoming children, teens, and adults at every level of experience. Being able to express myself through playing the piano is such a joy for me. Helping others experience this for themselves is my goal with all my students. I want you to have the confidence and skills you need to play what you want and feel free on the piano. That journey looks different for everyone, and together we'll discover what it means for you. I’ve taught piano lessons both in person and online. There are foundational elements that I teach all my students, such as good technique, basic scales, and chord progressions. From there, we can take a more theory integrated approach, we can focus on mastering specific songs you want to be able to play well, or we can explore improvisation and learning to use the piano to express how you feel. Whatever path you choose, I'll guide you step by step so you can grow into the pianist you want to become. The piano is more than an instrument, it's a way to tell your story. Let's begin your musical journey together and discover the freedom to play with confidence!

Piano lessons at a glance
I tailor my teaching methods for each individual student based on what they want to learn and their learning style. Firstly, for all of my students, I begin by building a solid foundation in technique. This includes how to properly position the hands on the piano and how to play with healthy movements that support the ability to perform both simple and technically challenging pieces effectively. I also introduce scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions. These elements build finger dexterity and provide a framework so that every student gains a basic understanding of how to play a simple version of most songs they may want to learn. From there, the curriculum can branch out in different directions depending on the student's interests. This may include sight reading, ear training, deeper study of theory and musical analysis, advanced technical skills for performance, or improvisation for creative self-expression. Ultimately, my teaching method is built around each individual student, adapting to their goals while balancing strong technical training with expression and enjoyment. My goal is to help each student not only improve their skills but also build the confidence to make playing the piano a meaningful part of their life.
