Matthew - Get to know your vocal coach

Hello! I'm Matthew, a graduate of Carthage College with a degree in music and an emphasis in musical theatre. I have been singing for 10+ years, and in that time, I have studied many styles and techniques. I am most well-versed in testosterone-based voices and voices that have already gone through puberty. I excel with classical and contemporary musical theatre styling, and along with preparing songs, I can help with acting choices. I'm also well-versed in preparing for an audition. I am very familiar with this genre and will help find the right song for you! In my free time, I have a ton of hobbies and crafts. I love board games and video games, as well as painting miniatures. In addition to performing in theatre, I also design sets and 3D model them myself! I'm open to working with you on any issue, no matter how big or small! Let me know if you're interested, and we can start singing ASAP!

Singing lessons highlights

I view my lessons as a very collaborative effort and work to grow vocal strength over time with many exercises and by assigning material to work on. I trust a student to work outside of lessons to grow even more, so we can face new challenges head-on during our time together. While I would help tweak technique and fix issues, I think it's incredibly important to listen to the students' perspective on their growth. I want them to get what they want out of lessons, not what I think they want. The focus of my lessons is to find and fix the placement of many things, such as breath, tone, and resonance. These were all things I struggled with in the past, and I am now very familiar with identifying and fixing issues. While I use a piano, I am no expert. I can help with giving a pitch or playing a warm-up, but to help with full songs, I employ either karaoke tracks from online or a website that plays the sheet music you purchase from them.
