Juan - Your piano teacher
Hi! I'm Juan Rogers, a classically trained pianist with over 15 years of experience, and a Masters degree in Education. Originally from the United States, I now work as a performing & recording artist in Tokyo, Japan. However, my real passion is in teaching others what I love to do most; how to play the piano. I teach people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of ability, in a style that suits their needs and desires as developing artists. My lessons consist of flexible yet robust sessions where music theory is leveraged with the excitement of learning in order to promote technical and expressive growth in one's playing. By focusing on the fundamentals such as chord knowledge, scale familiarity and ear training, students can excel at whatever style of playing they choose, whether that be classical, blues, or pop. With a background in classical music, technique and fundamentals are a must. Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven serve as a foundation in my playing. However, since moving to Tokyo, I have also fallen in love with the music of videos, of anime, and all sorts of films. And I find myself learning, performing, and teaching this music every day. I'd love to share the joy of all this music and help you reach your potential as well. Let's work together!

My teaching approach engages students in creative thinking rooted in traditional music theory and its associated exercises. Regardless of level or background, students will begin a general review of the fundamental chord progressions, scales, and their application to music. Students are expected to actively develop their ears according to these fundamentals and will be given short exercises often to ensure that their body of knowledge develops consistently. To help with this, online metronome apps or DAWs (digital audio workstations) will be utilized, though the focus will remain primarily on the keyboard. Once a solid foundation is established, theory knowledge will allow for exploration of more creative and expressive sessions. Pieces will be decided based on the students stated desires and my own needs-analysis. There is a general repertoire of classical and blues style music available for students to learn from, which can be tweaked according to their own preferences. By adapting my experience with the individual needs of students, we can help ensure that they will progress steadily on their piano journey.

Piano concept taught by Juan
During their recent music lesson, Juan and Kris reviewed fundamental music theory concepts, including time signatures, key signatures, and how to read notes on both treble and bass clefs. Kris dedicated time to rhythm exercises and commenced analyzing and playing Bach's Minuet in G major, concentrating on rhythmic accuracy and timing. Juan's assignment for Kris was to continue practicing the Bach piece, paying close attention to the timing and coordination required between the hands, and he informed her that the subsequent rhythm exercises would be in 3/4 time.

During their recent piano lesson, Juan and Kris delved into music theory, covering note reading, clefs, and time signatures. They also practiced rhythm exercises on the piano, with Kris specifically focusing on a piece in 3/4 time, emphasizing rhythm and counting. For their next lesson, Juan assigned note reading quizzes and rhythm exercises, and they plan to explore scales and key signatures.

Juan and Kris recently had a productive music lesson where they began by reviewing A minor scales. Following this, they delved into G major scales and their corresponding key signatures, utilizing the circle of fifths as a helpful guide. Kris actively practiced these scales and was also introduced to the Bach Minuet in G major. For practice, Juan assigned Kris to work on both the G major and E minor scales, as well as to study the Bach Minuet. Juan also committed to sending over the sheet music for the G major scale, the E minor scale, and the circle of fifths page.

During their recent piano lesson, Juan and Kris reviewed a piano exercise, focusing on rhythm and hand coordination. They then delved into music theory, covering triads, inversions, and major/minor chord construction. Kris practiced the A minor scale and was assigned to practice its different forms (natural, harmonic, and melodic) for the next lesson. Juan plans to introduce a new piece of music and discuss playing in different keys in the upcoming lesson.

Juan and Kris recently had a music lesson where they reviewed the C major scale, emphasizing legato and staccato techniques. Their exploration extended to C major triad inversions, which they applied within a 1-4-5-1 chord progression. Kris focused on using these inversions to create smoother transitions. Juan concluded the lesson by assigning continued practice of scales and chord progressions, encouraging them to incorporate both legato and staccato styles.

During a piano lesson, Juan and Kris reviewed Kris's piano piece, concentrating on rhythm and finger control. Their work then shifted to note reading and scale practice. Juan introduced A minor scales (natural, harmonic, and melodic) and C major arpeggios with inversions. Kris was assigned to practice the left-hand section of the song with a metronome, and Juan provided diagrams for the A minor scales. The city where this lesson occurred was not specified.
