About your music teacher
Hi, I’m Nick J Harvey – a recording artist, producer, and mixing engineer with over 25 years of experience in music creation. As a solo artist and studio owner, I’ve spent years shaping songs from the ground up, blending classic rock and blues influences with modern production techniques. This hands-on background allows me to teach not just the theory, but the real-world skills needed to produce tracks that stand out. I’ve worked across home studios and professional setups, experimenting with everything from analog warmth to digital precision. My teaching covers the entire production journey – recording, arranging, mixing, and final polish – giving students practical tools to take their ideas from rough demo to finished track. Whether you’re just starting with a DAW or want to refine your mixing for release-ready results, I tailor lessons to your level and goals. You’ll learn how to: • Build balanced mixes using EQ, compression, and effects • Capture great recordings with minimal gear • Understand arrangement and space in your productions • Develop an ear for tone, depth, and emotion in your mixes I believe learning production should be hands-on and inspiring, focusing on your sound rather than cookie-cutter techniques. My goal is to help you create music you’re proud of – tracks that truly connect. 🎛️ Ready to bring your ideas to life? Let’s create something amazing together.

Music lessons at a glance
My approach to teaching music production and mixing is all about making the complex simple, and the technical creative. I break down what can feel like overwhelming concepts—EQ curves, compression settings, gain staging—into clear, step-by-step techniques that you can immediately apply to your own music. I teach using a hands-on, project-based method. Instead of just theory, we work directly with your tracks (or mine if you’re starting out), so you see how each technique shapes the sound in real time. This keeps learning practical and connected to the music you want to make. To make things understandable, I: • Use the “Triangle of Production” – focusing on balance, space, and emotion to guide every mix decision. • Demystify the tools – showing you how to get the most from EQ, compression, reverb, and other effects without overcomplicating. • Layer learning – starting with core concepts (gain staging, frequency ranges) and building toward advanced techniques (automation, parallel processing, creative effects). • Explain the “why” behind every move – so you’re not just copying settings but understanding how to shape sound with intent. • Integrate creativity – encouraging you to experiment with textures, dynamics, and space to develop your own sonic signature. Students also gain insights into workflow, arrangement decisions, and studio mindset—the subtle things that make professional mixes stand out. By the end, you won’t just follow tutorials—you’ll think like a producer and make music that feels alive.

Music concepts taught by Nick J
The Student reviewed Wonder Wall and then focused on blues guitar techniques, including chord transitions, timing within the 12-bar blues pattern, and improvisational variations. They practiced chord finger placement and explored scales for soloing. The Tutor assigned practicing the new variations and 12-bar pattern for next session.

The Student explored melody creation and chord progressions in the key of C. They experimented with variations on a simple melody and learned how to harmonize it using different chords, with specific focus on C major, A minor and F major. For homework, the student is to continue experimenting with the melody and memorize the notes on the top three strings of the guitar.

The session centered around fretboard memorization techniques, using chord shapes and patterns. The Student practiced note identification on the E, A, and D strings, as well as within barre chords. Homework includes practicing the fretboard in segments, playing single notes and chords, and creating simple melodies on the E string.

The student and tutor worked on improving left-hand technique for bass guitar, focusing on finger exercises, proper hand positioning, and alternating finger techniques. The student was assigned to practice the 1-2-3 exercise with a metronome at 50 BPM. They will also work on the octave exercise, and the tutor will send a meeting invite for the next session.

The Student and Tutor worked on the song 'Country Roads', focusing on strumming, tempo, and melody. The session involved slowing down the song, using a drum beat for practice, and incorporating a capo. Homework involves practicing the chord changes, rhythm, and melody while listening to the original recording.
