Joshua - Your piano teacher
I’m Joshua Li, a Melbourne-based musician and tutor with a strong foundation in piano and a genuine passion for helping students find their unique voice through music. Over the past few years, I’ve worked with students of all ages and levels, focusing on everything from foundational skills like posture, technique, and sight-reading, to more creative areas like improvisation, chord progressions, and interpretation. I enjoy tailoring each lesson to suit the student’s interests and learning style — whether they’re preparing for exams, learning pop songs, or just playing for fun. Outside of teaching, I compose and produce music across a wide range of styles, and I’ve worked on soundtracks for film, games, and animation. This background lets me bring a broader perspective to lessons and show students how music connects across different platforms and genres. My teaching style is calm, encouraging, and adaptable. I believe in creating a space where students feel supported, heard, and inspired to improve — not just as players, but as musicians.

My teaching method is all about adapting to the student — no two learners are the same, so I try to meet them where they are. Some students thrive with structured pieces and method books, while others are more motivated by learning songs they love or experimenting with their own ideas. I like blending both worlds: building solid technical foundations (like hand positioning, rhythm, and theory) while also keeping things creative and engaging. I often break down songs into patterns to make them easier to understand — chord shapes, progressions, phrasing — and I make sure to explain the “why” behind the notes. I also like to bring in a bit of ear training, improvisation, and even simple songwriting for students who are curious. My goal is to help them not only play the piano but connect with music in a way that feels personal and rewarding. Most importantly, I keep the vibe relaxed, encouraging, and pressure-free. Progress looks different for everyone, and I want my students to feel proud of their journey — whether they’re heading toward an exam or just playing for fun.
