About your vocal coach
Hi! My name is Ben and I am a Musical Director, Actor and Composer. I have 4 years of singing teaching experience of all ages and skill levels, from kids to West End professionals. I am an actor in Musical Theatre, and have performed professionally across stage, opera, and pantomime, and I am classically trained in a variety of styles such as contemporary MT, classical, jazz and pop. I am equally behind and in front of the piano, and my rounded perspective as both the MD and the performer has armed me with a complete understanding of the efficacy of techniques and styles, and what works! Beyond Musical Theatre, I was the MD of a barbershop choir for three years, which has trained my ear for pitch and harmony to a razor-sharp degree. I am equally comfortable either singing or listening a cappella as I am with backing tracks. Whatever is most comfortable for you!
Ben graduated from Durham University

Singing lessons overview
I will always begin by getting to know you as an individual. Singing is such a personal and, sometimes, vulnerable activity - it is of vital importance that you enjoy it and feel comfortable in sharing it. I've taught people before who have never sung in front of people, and I've taught people who have been singing in front of people for their whole life, and it does not matter where you are! Efficiency, efficiency, efficiency is my motto. Singing should be easeful - not "easy", "easeful"! - as I focus on technique and exercise as a means to find release in the voice, whether it's a low croon or a high belt. Lightness is the key! My teaching is based on patience and consistency - the two secret ingredients to achieving results no matter your discipline. As well as those high notes, I will teach you how to support your breath, proper standing posture and proper mouth/palate posture. These details are less romantic than the performance itself, but the good news is that with a little bit of early focus, these can quickly become muscle memory. As your singing teacher, I will strengthen your voice, instil good and renewable singing habits and progress your singing journey, no matter the direction you want to head! Truthfully I used to be a skeptic about singing lessons over Zoom or other platforms until I started teaching them. As a student, it just makes sense - affordable and convenient, and as a teacher, you won't believe just how much we can pick up on and support with over Zoom.
