Ryan - Know your guitar teacher

Do you have children that need an emotional outlet? Are you a college-bound musician wishing to get ahead on your music theory? Are you a shredder that just wants to learn a few more tricks? Then this is for you! I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music specializing in performance and Jazz Studies. I also have 15 years of gigging experience so I can help young artists avoid some rookie mistakes. I have over 10 years teaching experience with genres ranging from rock, jazz, pop, country, hair metal, funk and many more. A pretty large part of my teaching philosophy is that playing guitar has to stay fun. If I've told you to learn all the modes of a harmonic minor scale, I'm quite aware of how that metronome will be on your mental health. :) We'll take some time to relax and play something you've been wanting to learn. I can't wait to start our journey together!

Guitar lessons quick guide

My approach to teaching guitar is that no matter how hard, make it fun! Students can get burnt out easily if you push too much on them. I don't have a one-size-fits-all strategy: Everyone learns at their own pace and style. All beginner students, (Children and adults) will start with the basics of music/theory and the guitar. We'll talk about your goals as a guitarist and I'll guide you through the steps. If your goal is to play jazz at a professional level, we'll be heavy on theory and technique, tone and creativity. If your goal is to make lasting memories around the campfire, then a less intense regime will work just fine for you. You'll be learning open chords and basic progressions. However, unlike the jazz guitarist, we'll be focusing on singing while playing, story-telling and showmanship. We also will explore different digital setups, software, amps, microphones and acoustics. No matter your needs, I'm here to help you find what you're looking for. To me, music is the last form of real magic left. We know the science behind audio frequencies, but I couldn't tell you why my hair stands up during a crescendo or why my heart aches after a guitarist bends down from a m3 to the root. This is an underestimated gift to be able to create music. I couldn't be happier than to share this gift with you.

Ryan and Dong collaborated on guitar techniques, covering strumming muted strings, bending, vibrato, and various scale patterns. Dong dedicated time to practicing scales and received valuable advice regarding hand positioning, finger strength, and how to incorporate modes into his soloing. Ryan's suggestions for future practice included utilizing a metronome, learning licks from other guitarists, and potentially exploring the chorus of "The Martian" in a subsequent lesson.

A guitar lesson was conducted for a student residing in Fort Lauderdale, focusing on smoother transitions between E minor, A minor, and D minor chords. The instructor introduced music theory concepts related to rhythm and timing, including quarter notes and eighth notes, to help the learner improve tempo. The student was assigned to practice chord transitions with a metronome and was briefly introduced to power chords as a preview of rock music techniques.
