About your physics tutor
I am Andrew May, a teacher with 25 years experience teaching general science with a physics specialism. I currently teach GCSE and A level physics in a UK school. In addition, I have been tutoring for over 15 years, with the last 5 years mostly online. I also have 12 years experience teaching AP physics B from time overseas in an international context. As a result I have enjoyed teaching students of many nationalities as a result. I have a responsive teaching style with ample experience to quickly detect what students need to progress. I can help with homework difficulties, supplement class teaching, provide additional practice materials, help structure revision, and coach through exam feedback. In addition to physics I have many years experience teaching and tutoring GCSE chemistry and biology. As a father of 4 children and a y12/13 form tutor I can, where appropriate, help guide students as they think through next steps including UCAS applications.

Physics class overview
I begin most lessons by asking if there is clearly something that needs help. This may be a confusing homework task, an upcoming test, or a disappointing test score. This may also be help with material being taught in lessons. Many students do not know what they need help with so some diagnostic questioning is needed to quickly identify the problem areas and where to make a start. A typical tutoring session will involve a Q&A review of content, with notes provided where appropriate, followed by some practice questions at an appropriate level. At A level I have experience teaching AQA, OCR and Edexcel physics content. Where appropriate I incorporate online simulations and other online resources to develop intutive mental models and deep conceptual understanding. Every student has different ways of learning, comes with different background knowledge and interestsm, and has unique gaps in their understanding. My job is to find those gaps, build on what is there, and develop confidence and competence.
