About your music teacher
Hi, I'm Garret Fernandez, and I have loved teaching for many years. I have worked with a wide variety of students, helping them to accomplish their goals. I try to make every lesson engaging and fun, so that the students enjoy their time as well as learn a ton of music! Let's jump right into playing some piano, I will help you learn to read and appreciate all the different sounds we can make with the keyboard. I have a very structured path to success but I am also able to adjust the lesson plan depending on the needs of the students, as everyone is different in what they excel at and what they have difficulty doing. I am very patient and understanding and the lessons will never be stressful! I can help students not only learn to play, but also to understand the music, which is just as significant! Looking forward to meeting you and beginning this journey!

Music lessons at a glance
My teaching method involves slowly building up all the right techniques, ideas and concepts that will ultimately help you to teach yourself so that you will never be lost even when you no longer have a teacher. I specialize in theory, sight-reading, and ear training. I have many tricks and methods to making all this much easier, and I progress in a fashion that builds upon each previous lesson. But I will never go too fast or brush past things that are important. We will take as much time as we need to learn the material and then when we both feel that we are ready to move on we will do so. I had many great teachers through college and beyond, even to this day I work with some of the greatest musicians in Las Vegas, so I have learned my pedagogical techniques from other very well respected musicians. I myself perform here in the city as well as give lessons.

Music concepts taught by Garret
Student and Tutor worked on piano scales, reviewing D and A two-octave scales, and adding the E scale for future practice. They also practiced identifying and playing D chords, with a new homework assignment to play them hands together, up and down. The session further focused on a new song, delving into the 3/8 time signature and practicing both right and left hands with a metronome, emphasizing rhythmic accuracy and dynamics. Student was assigned to practice the D chords hands together and continue working on the song with the metronome.

Dynamic Balance in Hands-Together Playing
The student and Tutor reviewed note identification homework and practiced D major scale chords and their names, including the new concept of first inversions. They began working on a new piece, "Calico Cat," focusing on right-hand note reading, rhythmic counting, and left-hand note identification. The Tutor assigned practicing the first inversion chords and the new "Calico Cat" piece for homework.

Achieving Dynamic Balance (Hand Volume)
The Student and Tutor worked on piano techniques, including practicing arpeggios and learning the C major scale for both hands. They also focused on rhythm by counting beats while playing, identifying measure lines, and discussing musical dynamics. The Student practiced the "I Like Song" and was introduced to new pieces, "Ode to Joy" and "C Story." Homework includes practicing the C scale three times with each hand, aiming for faster tempo on "Ode to Joy," and counting/figuring out notes for both new songs.

Reading Sheet Music: A Directional Approach
The Student and Tutor engaged in an introductory piano lesson, covering fundamental concepts such as identifying C notes on the keyboard, basic hand positions, and playing initial finger number exercises. They also discussed the C major chord, the musical alphabet, and foundational rhythm counting. The Tutor outlined a practice plan for the week and discussed future topics including reading real notes and advanced rhythm.

The tutor and student reviewed piano scales, syncopation, and chord theory, including major, minor, diminished, and augmented types. They practiced forming triads on scale degrees and introduced dominant seventh chords and their resolutions, with the student working on reading sheet music for a new piece.

The Student and Tutor reviewed note reading assignments, progressing to more challenging material. They focused on enhancing the performance of a musical piece by incorporating metronome practice and dynamics. A substantial part of the session involved a theoretical lesson on the D major scale and its associated chords, including distinguishing major, minor, and diminished qualities using half steps and Roman numeral analysis. The student was assigned to practice D major scales and chords for homework.
