About your music teacher
Hi, I'm Garret Fernandez, and I have loved teaching for many years. I have worked with a wide variety of students, helping them to accomplish their goals. I try to make every lesson engaging and fun, so that the students enjoy their time as well as learn a ton of music! Let's jump right into playing some piano, I will help you learn to read and appreciate all the different sounds we can make with the keyboard. I have a very structured path to success but I am also able to adjust the lesson plan depending on the needs of the students, as everyone is different in what they excel at and what they have difficulty doing. I am very patient and understanding and the lessons will never be stressful! I can help students not only learn to play, but also to understand the music, which is just as significant! Looking forward to meeting you and beginning this journey!

Music lessons at a glance
My teaching method involves slowly building up all the right techniques, ideas and concepts that will ultimately help you to teach yourself so that you will never be lost even when you no longer have a teacher. I specialize in theory, sight-reading, and ear training. I have many tricks and methods to making all this much easier, and I progress in a fashion that builds upon each previous lesson. But I will never go too fast or brush past things that are important. We will take as much time as we need to learn the material and then when we both feel that we are ready to move on we will do so. I had many great teachers through college and beyond, even to this day I work with some of the greatest musicians in Las Vegas, so I have learned my pedagogical techniques from other very well respected musicians. I myself perform here in the city as well as give lessons.

Music concepts taught by Garret
The Student worked on sight-reading and rhythm, focusing on a challenging piece and learning strategies for note recognition and counting. They also started a new piece and were introduced to two-octave scales. Homework includes finishing the problem piece, learning as much of the new piece as possible, and practicing the assigned scales.
Two-Octave C Scale with 3-4-3 Fingering
Rhythmic Counting and Note Values
Fermata (𝄐)
E Minor Chord (EGB)
Treble Clef Lines: EGBDF
Treble Clef Spaces: FACE
A Seventh (A7) Chord
The student and tutor worked on improving rhythmic precision and note duration in piano playing. They practiced exercises using a metronome to internalize timing and used specific techniques to refine hand posture and finger action. The next session will likely involve continued work on metronome exercises and technique.
Metronome Precision and Note Duration
Piano Technique: Finger Curvature and 'Stabbing' Notes
Progressive Practice Strategy: Working Backwards
The student and tutor worked through a piano piece, "The Galway Piper," focusing on playing from sheet music, identifying chords and notes, and understanding musical notation. They also reviewed scales and introduced concepts related to time signatures and rhythmic counting for a new piece.
Musical Notation: Dynamic Markings
Chord Identification and Function
Time Signatures and Meter
Key Signatures and Scales
The student and tutor reviewed piano concepts including chord identification (D7, A7), scale construction (B scale, F scale), and interpreting musical notation for specific songs like "Fish and Chips and Vinegar" and "Gahway Piper." The student was advised to focus on reading notes, counting, and following circled finger numbers for future practice.

Piano Technique: Hand Position and Fingerings
Scale Practice and Patterns
Reading Music: Measure Numbers and Fingerings
The student and tutor reviewed piano scales, focusing on technical refinements like wrist position and finger curvature. They worked on learning new scales (E scale), practicing existing pieces ("My Country, 'Tis of Thee," "Fish and Chips and Vinegar"), and developing sight-reading skills without looking at the hands. The session also introduced new concepts like key signatures, chord names (D7), and metronome practice, with plans to continue with "The Galway Piper" and reinforce note-reading.
