About your music teacher
Hi, I'm Garret Fernandez, and I have loved teaching for many years. I have worked with a wide variety of students, helping them to accomplish their goals. I try to make every lesson engaging and fun, so that the students enjoy their time as well as learn a ton of music! Let's jump right into playing some piano, I will help you learn to read and appreciate all the different sounds we can make with the keyboard. I have a very structured path to success but I am also able to adjust the lesson plan depending on the needs of the students, as everyone is different in what they excel at and what they have difficulty doing. I am very patient and understanding and the lessons will never be stressful! I can help students not only learn to play, but also to understand the music, which is just as significant! Looking forward to meeting you and beginning this journey!

Music lessons at a glance
My teaching method involves slowly building up all the right techniques, ideas and concepts that will ultimately help you to teach yourself so that you will never be lost even when you no longer have a teacher. I specialize in theory, sight-reading, and ear training. I have many tricks and methods to making all this much easier, and I progress in a fashion that builds upon each previous lesson. But I will never go too fast or brush past things that are important. We will take as much time as we need to learn the material and then when we both feel that we are ready to move on we will do so. I had many great teachers through college and beyond, even to this day I work with some of the greatest musicians in Las Vegas, so I have learned my pedagogical techniques from other very well respected musicians. I myself perform here in the city as well as give lessons.

Music concept taught by Garret
During their piano lesson, Garret guided Jonathan through chord exercises, inversions, and rhythm practice, utilizing "Scar Bro Fire" and "Amazing Grace." Jonathan focused on extended chord positions and was introduced to tonicization and dominant chords. Garret assigned chord exercises and a modern piece by Yon Tearson for their next lesson in two weeks.

During their piano lesson, Garret and CatBoyRenFu concentrated on rhythm and counting, applying these skills to 'Russian sailor dance' and 'Boogie on Broadway'. CatBoyRenFu also dedicated time to practicing scales, reviewing sharps and flats, and exploring legato and rests. For continued practice, Garret recommended scales with a metronome and faster counting for 'Boogie on Broadway'.

Garret and a piano student focused on their lesson, covering rhythm, tempo, time signatures, and key signatures. The learner, who lives in Southside, worked on the "Mexican Hand Clapping Song" and the "Can-Can," and practiced the F scale and chord inversions with a metronome. For their next lesson, they were assigned to practice the "Mexican Hand Clapping Song" and Scarborough Fair (page 135).

During a recent lesson, two individuals worked on scales, musical symbols, and chord construction. One of the learners, who resides in West Fresno, focused on practicing the F scale, learning about sharps and flats, and starting the song 'Lead on Black Horse'. The instruction emphasized techniques like legato, staccato, and highlighting the first beat of each measure. For continued progress, the student received advice to practice the new song, paying close attention to finger placements and musical symbols.

During their recent music lesson, Garret and Jonathan reviewed chord progressions, dynamics, and rhythm, utilizing Jonathan's own compositions and assigned pieces from a music book. Jonathan dedicated time to practicing techniques for controlling dynamics and accurately counting rhythms. To reinforce these concepts and prepare for their next lesson, Garret assigned specific pieces from the book, found on pages 113 and 120.

In Tampa, Garret worked with Jonathan on piano, covering a range of topics. Their lesson focused on scales, including the B scale, dynamics in a French song, and a waltz, where they emphasized counting, rhythm, and chord recognition. Jonathan was assigned 'Cafe Vienna' (page 94) for practice, with a particular focus on counting and dynamics. Garret also offered to review any original piano compositions Jonathan has written.
