About your tutor

Math is an essential tool for all scientific discovery as well as academic excellence in the sciences. While I have no formal mathematics tutoring experience, I have consistently helped class mates and friends as an informal tutor, and I personally always use mathematical analytical approaches in my tutoring and my own personal projects very often. As an example, I used linear algebra to model the south Korean population using data of the year 2023 in a simplified Leslie Matrix model, and alongside this project I have worked on programming a machine learning algorithm using statistical inference and used this script to analyse data obtained through my time as a cognitive neuroscience research assistant.

Class overview

I focus on using a visual and fundamental based approach to deepening understanding of topics. Having a visual framework to ask questions makes it easier to get comfortable with the abstractness of mathematics, and due to the nature of the building blocks of math as being crucial, ensuring that those fine details are well understood is crucial to me, and so I always try to cover any aspect of a topic that I believe are crucial to full understanding. Of course, this is catered to the level of understanding required by the student, and so I make sure to tailor my explanation of topics based on the needs of each particular student. I am able to cover a wide array of topics in mathematics, including calculus, geometry, linear algebra, and other common branches.

Madiha learned about 17 hours ago

Ismail tutored Mahid on the process of glycolysis, including the enzymes involved, its regulation, and its importance in different organisms. They also discussed isomers and Gibbs free energy. The session covered the connection between glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, as well as the role of anaerobic fermentation in organisms lacking mitochondria. Next time they will discuss the Krebs cycle.

Ismail tutored Minha on cell biology, covering cell types, organelles, and the cell cycle with a focus on mitosis and its phases. They also discussed how DNA codes for proteins and enzymes, which perform various functions within the cell. No homework was explicitly assigned, but Ismail offered it if Minha wanted additional practice.

Clarence learned about 20 hours ago

Ismail and Clarence discussed challenging physics concepts, including Archimedes' principle, buoyancy, Newtonian physics versus relativity, and the Bernoulli equation. Clarence received advice on problem-solving strategies and upcoming topics, with a recommendation to use Khan Academy as a resource. They agreed to a follow-up session next Wednesday and discussed Clarence's plan to practice many problems related to gravity, fluids, and relativity in preparation for his test.

Janette learned 4 days ago

Ismail helps Janette understand the citric acid cycle and the pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) complex. They discuss the PDH complex's three enzymes (E1, E2, E3) and five coenzymes (TPP, lipoate, CoA, FAD+, NAD+) that convert pyruvate to acetyl-CoA. Lipoate acts as a mobile arm to transfer substrates between enzymes. The citric acid cycle, starting with acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate, produces NADH, FADH2, and GTP, regenerating oxaloacetate. They also cover the roles of coenzymes and calculating delta G and equilibrium constants, emphasizing the importance of reaction direction.

Noah learned 4 days ago

Ismail tutored Noah on organic chemistry, specifically reviewing organolithium and Grignard reagents, carbonyl reaction mechanisms, and factors influencing acidity. Noah worked through practice problems and clarified his understanding of reaction steps and stereochemical outcomes. They discussed strategies for the upcoming MCAT, focusing on conceptual understanding over rote memorization.

Noah learned 7 days ago

Ismail and Noah reviewed carbonyl chemistry, focusing on Grignard reactions and related concepts such as reagent selectivity, protecting groups, and leaving group effects. Noah worked through practice problems involving Grignard reagents, and Ismail provided guidance on reaction mechanisms and strategic problem-solving. They scheduled another session for Sunday to continue the review.
