Andy - Know your guitar teacher
I’m Andy Raven—a guitarist, songwriter, and teacher with over 15 years of playing, touring, and recording experience. I’ve played Glastonbury, recorded in major London studios, and worked across styles from blues and indie to English and Celtic folk. My teaching style is relaxed but focused—I tailor each lesson to your goals, whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time, working on advanced phrasing, or keen for your child to have fun and progress. I teach electric and acoustic with an emphasis on feel, musicality and artistic identity. I love teaching diverse players of all standards and ages. I also hold a PhD in literature. I aim to make every single lesson creative, encouraging, and genuinely enjoyable.
Guitar lessons quick guide
My approach is shaped by each student’s goals—no two lessons are the same. What matters most is that students spend real time playing their instrument during the lesson. I favour a “songs first” method: we start with music you enjoy, and theory follows naturally from there. With a background in teaching English in schools and universities, I bring structure, clarity, and warmth to every session. I’ve also spent much of my adult life working in SEN, so I’m particularly attuned to neurodivergent learners. Lessons are creative, flexible, and rooted in helping you feel confident and connected to the music. I had a fantastic teacher growing up—and I see it as a real privilege to now guide others.

Guitar concept taught by Andy
Andy Raven guided Barry Hellman through a guitar lesson, focusing on palm muting and rhythm, specifically in the context of Metallica riffs. Barry practiced palm muting on the E string and worked on playing a Metallica riff rhythmically. Andy suggested using a metronome for practice and plans to choose new material for their next lesson.

Andy Raven taught about seventh chords and their application in the song "You've Got a Friend." The learner, who resides in South Land Park, practiced G major 7, B dominant 7, A minor 7, D7 sus4, and F sharp minor 7 chords, along with transitions between them. Andy assigned practice on these chords and chord changes for the upcoming week.

Andy Raven taught Barry Hellman and his sister guitar techniques for playing the "Enter Sandman" riff in separate lessons. The focus was on tremolo (bending notes) and sliding, which they practiced on specific frets and strings. Andy instructed them to practice the riff slowly with a steady rhythm and correct fingering throughout the week, reinforcing these guitar skills.

During a recent guitar lesson, Andy taught Cara new guitar techniques, including chord variations, finger exercises, and scale practice. Cara actively worked on fingerpicking patterns, chord changes, and a C scale in different positions on the neck. They also discussed preparing a Carol King song for their next lesson, highlighting the importance of scales for finger dexterity and improvisation.

The instructor provided a lesson on guitar posture, C chord shapes, and introduced a finger-picking roll technique. The learner, a resident of Mesa, diligently practiced chord changes and finger placement, focusing on smooth transitions and avoiding string bending. To allow for more practice time, the next lesson was postponed by a week.

Andy Raven guided a guitar lesson focused on chord progressions, transposition, and fingerpicking techniques. The learner, who resides in West Oakland, practiced transposing the song "Cool About It" from C to D and explored the Nashville numbering system for chords. Andy will send an updated transcription of the song, and another lesson was scheduled for the following week.
