About your piano teacher

I'm Stephen Paul, a Bachelors-educated piano tutor with over 2 years of experience offering personalized lessons in Jazz and Classical piano, as well as music theory and composition. I've had about 15 years of experience playing the piano and around 11 playing trombone. I've had professional experience on both. I especially excel at teaching ear training, theory, improvisation, but I also am great with fundamentals. Whether you're a beginner or intermediate player, I will cover whatever theory or technique that you need. Some examples of things that I'm teaching students are the first movement of the "Moonlight Sonata", Chopin's Preludes and jazz standards such as "Take the 'A' Train" or "Autumn Leaves". I'm also very capable of teaching whatever songs that my students want to learn even if I've only heard them a few times. Hope to see many of you in lessons!

Piano lessons overview

My teaching approach is understanding and encouraging, but emphasizes building very solid fundamentals before moving on to the next thing. Whether it's classical or jazz, having technical facility on piano and an understanding of basic music theory is fundamental. I'm good with teaching kids or adults at beginner and intermediate levels. I will be able to provide my own written exercises to work on technique and understanding of theory, and I am more than willing to write up some quick music for a basic song that a student may want to learn. For each student I will structure lessons for what they want and need. I'm also open to discussing related topics such as composing or improvising should a student suggest it. I have a lot of experience in those areas and would be happy to share! So long as my students are dedicated to putting in the necessary practice, I will be able to provide what they need to progress in piano.
