English classes overview

My classes are custom from start to finish. I don't do one size fits all teaching, as no two students are exactly the same. I create custom tailored programs for each and every student, that adapt to your preferred learning method and preferred areas of study, in order to maximise the speed at which you learn. As someone who has studied languages for many years, I know that the process can be stressful, tedious, and, if not done properly, boring. As such, I streamline the process, removing the typical repetitive drills, vocabulary tests, and endless grammar, in favour of a more practical approach that allows you to get speaking in your chosen field quickly and confidently. If you are looking for a teacher that will push you to be the best speaker you can be, while simultaneously staying aware of the things you struggle with and the difficulties you face, then my lessons are for you!

ESL concepts taught by Toby

Student learned 3 days ago

The tutor introduced the concept of discursive writing to the student and assigned a practice exercise using an extract from "The Sniper." The student attempted the exercise, and the tutor provided feedback on their writing structure, focusing on making points before providing evidence and revising their approach to analysis for future assignments. The next lesson will focus on further developing these skills and exploring additional texts.

The tutor and student focused on vocal warm-ups and practicing challenging sections of two songs, "Vagabond" and "Closer." They worked on melodic transitions, breath support, and pitch accuracy. The student was assigned to practice the chorus and first verse of "Closer" and revisit the last verse of "Vagabond" for the next session.

The tutor and student reviewed six basic Spanish verb tenses, including present simple, present continuous, preterite, imperfect, near future, and simple future. They also briefly touched upon grammatical moods and introduced the concept of irregular verbs and accents. The homework assignment involves reviewing past and present perfect tenses and summarizing a short Spanish article.

The tutor and student explored vocal techniques, focusing on improving voice smoothness and register transitions (chest, head, falsetto). They practiced exercises to develop breath support, vocal placement, and pitch accuracy, and identified the student's vocal range as likely baritone. Future lessons will focus on refining these areas and applying techniques to songs.

The tutor and student practiced translating a story from Spanish and then delved into the Spanish imperative mood, covering its uses, forms, and conjugations. The student then applied their learning by translating English imperative sentences into Spanish, with plans to cover other imperative forms in the next lesson.
