Ani - Know your guitar teacher
I have a rich and diverse background in music, particularly in guitar, spanning several decades. My journey began in earnest when I graduated in 1992 from my first college as a guitar major. During my studies, I was fortunate to immerse myself in multiple musical genres, including rock, classical, and jazz, which has given me a versatile approach to the instrument. One of the highlights of my academic experience was studying under the legendary Jorje Morel, who was a direct student of the iconic classical guitarist Andrés Segovia. This exposure to Segovia’s lineage allowed me to deeply explore classical guitar techniques, discipline, and musicality, and it left an indelible mark on my playing. In addition to my classical training, I also had the privilege of studying with Eddie Ojeda, the rock guitarist known for his work with the popular 80s heavy metal band Twisted Sister. As a teenager, Eddie helped shape my understanding of rock guitar, imparting key techniques and performance skills that were fundamental to my development. His guidance allowed me to blend the intensity and expressiveness of rock with the finesse and technicality of classical guitar. Throughout my career, I’ve continued to stay active in the guitar community by attending numerous guitar workshops and festivals, where I’ve had the opportunity to both learn from and collaborate with other musicians. These experiences have been invaluable in broadening my knowledge, as well as keeping me up-to-date with evolving trends and techniques in the guitar world. For the past 35 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to both teach and perform, which has been incredibly fulfilling. Teaching has allowed me to share my knowledge and passion with students of all levels.

Guitar lessons quick guide
My teaching methodology focuses on creating a well-rounded, hands-on approach to learning guitar, bass, and or banjo. I guide students through a structured book, helping them progress steadily with a clear, comprehensive path. I emphasize learning versatile strum patterns, movable chords, and essential chord progressions, allowing students to apply these skills immediately to their favorite songs. Alongside this, I incorporate a proven practice method that I teach, which ensures consistent, effective learning. The goal is to make lessons enjoyable and accessible, helping students develop both technical skills and musical creativity. I provide students with helpful apps and PDFs to reinforce lessons and support homework, making practice more engaging and ensuring steady progress. I also make note reading fun using a game-like app that keeps students engaged and motivated.

The Tutor and Student focused on a variety of vocal warm-ups and exercises to improve vocal technique and performance. They practiced methods for throat opening, tongue stretching, consistent airflow, and proper breath support. The session also covered dynamic interpretation in song, specifically the concept of grounding for high notes and audience engagement, with homework assigned to practice vocal projection and analyze song structures.

Diaphragmatic Breathing & Air Support
The Student and Tutor focused on vocal technique and ear training. They practiced identifying major thirds both ascending and descending, and worked on recognizing scale degrees within a melody. The Student also performed a song, receiving specific feedback on breath support and mouth shape to improve projection and overcome self-consciousness in higher-intensity passages. The Tutor plans to send additional pointers for the song as follow-up.

The Student and Tutor focused on vocal exercises, including scale patterns and specific note combinations, to improve pitch accuracy, resonance, and range. The Student successfully achieved a high C (C5) during range extension work. They discussed incorporating practice into daily routines like walks, and the Student will reach out to schedule the next session.

Student and Tutor engaged in a singing lesson focusing on vocal warm-ups, nasal resonance, and breath control exercises. They practiced specific vocal drills using vowel sounds and sustained consonants to improve fluidity and reduce tension. The session also included song practice, with particular attention paid to managing vocal breaks and achieving relaxed projection on higher notes, with homework assigned for continued consonant-based airflow exercises.
