Angela - Know your guitar teacher
I’m Angela McIntosh, a double-certificate holder with 15 years of guitar experience. I teach beginners, especially those wanting to learn chords so that they can play virtually any song! As time goes on, we can get into more complex chords, bar chords, finger style, etc. I feel a song-focused approach as opposed to a scale-focused approach leads to better practice outcomes, and teaches the student in context (though I do encourage scale practice as well). I believe patience is key for beginners, especially younger musicians who might experience some discomfort in the fingers when just starting out. Rest assured, the sting goes away quickly as callouses form. If you are looking to use guitar to write songs, I am always happy to teach songwriting skills in conjunction; one of my specialties is chord progressions and their emotive qualities. I look forward to working with you!

Guitar lessons quick guide
The core of my teaching is patience and empathy. Students do better when they feel safe and seen as an equal, even though they’re just starting out. I want to hear your voice, what your goals are, what is working and what isn’t, how motivation affects your practice, all of these inform my lessons, and no answer will be judged. I use guitar tabs to find chords for songs, and will occasionally modify them if I think there are easier or better chords. Metronome apps are supremely helpful for teaching consistent rhythm, and I believe that that practice should start early. Every lesson is specifically tailored to the students individual goals and learning style. If you feel you’re not very good, but you’re motivated, all the better! Hard work is far more important than natural talent, and “bad” playing (very subjective) is the foundation of all good playing. Let’s build upon that!
