Empathetic and judgment-free learning with a focus on the specific needs of the student

Hi, my name is Luis, it's nice to meet you. I currently live in Puerto Rico but will move to the United States this year. I'm a foreign language instructor with 10+ years' experience in teaching and tutoring. I'm above all a now-graduated Humanities student from the University of Puerto Rico, but for my Bachelor's I majored in Foreign Languages, and I studied Translation for my Master's. In this process I've learned about many things, including Literature, Art History, Science, Gastronomy, among others. As an instructor I've taught students 14 years old and up, from beginner to advanced levels, although mostly in university settings. I also have experience in other linguistics-related areas, such as translating, editing, and interpreting. While English and Spanish are my native languages, in my academic preparation I have learned other languages such as French (C1), German (B1), and Russian (A1), and I would also love to learn Japanese someday. I love teaching because I also learn a from meeting new people and helping them reach their goals, and I love teaching languages specifically because learning a new language is like acquiring a new soul. I also enjoy music, theater, film, and weightlifting.

I speak English, Spanish, and French, all of which I have taught in the classroom and in virtual settings, and I also know intermediate German. I have direct experience with students of all ages who are just starting out, as well as those who have been a few years in the game and are in the process of obtaining their B1 or B2 proficiency level. I like to focus equally on all aspects of the language: vocabulary, phonetics, and grammar, as they all contribute to mastering a language. I teach in a friendly "neutral" way, and I'm very adaptable and good at determining what works and what doesn't, doing my best to make sure that students' needs are being met. I can adapt a very casual, conversational style of teaching, as well as a more academic and rigorous approach.
