My piano teaching methodology is rooted in building a strong technical foundation while nurturing musical expression and confidence. I place a strong emphasis on proper technique from the start—focusing on hand positioning, finger strength, posture, wrist movement, and overall body alignment to support healthy and effective piano playing. Each student follows a structured, progressive path based on their individual needs, age, and learning style. I incorporate well-established piano methods such as Faber Piano Adventures, Alfred’s Basic Piano Library, Bastien Piano Basics, and John Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course to ensure students receive a well-rounded musical education. These materials provide engaging, pedagogically sound instruction in areas such as note reading, rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, and music theory. Alongside method books, I include technical exercises like Hanon, Czerny, and scale/arpeggio practice to develop dexterity, precision, and fluency at the keyboard. Sight-reading, ear training, and rhythmic drills are also part of each student’s routine, helping to build musicianship skills that go beyond playing pieces accurately. For students interested in improvisation, chord progressions, and playing by ear, I gradually introduce functional harmony and lead sheet interpretation. Whether a student is learning to play their first notes or refining their technique at an intermediate level, my goal is to provide a balanced, methodical approach that lays the groundwork for confident, expressive, and lifelong piano playing.

The student and tutor worked on vocal exercises to improve breathing and vocal range. The student practiced the song "Sway," focusing on melody, timing, and vocal projection techniques. They discussed continuing with "Sway" or starting a new song next session, and decided on a break for the holidays with the plan to review and wrap up "Sway" in the next lesson before potentially moving on to a new song after the break.

Evan was assigned to listen to "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash to prepare for the next lesson. Suny also suggested that Evan explore Christmas songs by Michael Bubé or Johnny Cash for future sessions.

Lopez was the first instructor to help me grasp chord voicings and swing rhythm on a grand piano. I am an Upper Valley jazz lover. She has a wealth of knowledge and makes even difficult progressions seem manageable. I get creative energy from every session.

The lessons are engaging informative and filled with energy with Lopez Buckey. Tutoring in Forest Hills she emphasizes not only technical skills but also the emotional and expressive side of music which has made a remarkable impact on my learning experience.
