Since 2012, I have been volunteering with the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts. My assignment was to tutor a Spanish woman how to improve her writing skills. She was very concerned about writing emails at her job. I must say that she was an advanced student, so I gave her a challenge. I offered my best book on practical English usage. Additionally, I developed a syllabus so that she would know what I expected from her. The first few months proved to be easy for her, even though the work was not simple. However, she wanted to know more about the fundamentals of English. Therefore, I had to adjust my approach. She was naturally gifted, but she demanded explanation for the things that she was learning. The student needed me to explain how English differed from the speaking aspect and the writing aspect. For example, English requires that every sentence needs a subject and a verb, with the exception of imperative sentences, but in Spanish the subject can be omitted. That detail might seem small, but it gave us a huge problem when it came to sentence structure. Apparently, Spanish and English cannot be translated word for word. As the years passed, her writing improved. She felt more confident about writing emails.
