Owen - About your AP tutor

I have been tutoring for several years now and have graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a 3.94 GPA and degree in neuroscience and will be attending the University of Michigan dental school this coming year, I have been a peer tutor for years tutoring in biology, chemistry, among another other nine subjects. I’ve had great success in my studies and have really enjoyed it, and believe in finding a way to enjoy the process, and teach students in a way that prompts students to solve problems on their own through guidance rather than giving the answer. This was a technique I was able to hone in during extensive tutoring classes from the UNC learning center, apart from this I’ve also been a lecturer for biology lab classes at the undergrad level and have been TA. I really enjoy tutoring and I love to learn, and I believe sharing that passion is a great way to inspire and help students develop their own passion for the subject. I have also extensive experience with guiding and mentoring students through research, teaching at the high school level in biology, as well for chemistry at the high school level additionally, I have helped with preparation for standardized exams, such as the DAT, OAT, and MCAT I also have extensive experience in writing, as well for psychology (and a degree in it) where I can help as well for help you get the resources you need to be successful in a class.

AP concepts taught by Owen

Student learned 6 days ago

The tutor and student reviewed concepts related to gases, including the ideal gas law, partial pressures, kinetic theory, diffusion, density, and molar mass calculations. They worked through several practice problems from an exercise sheet, applying relevant formulas and principles, and concluded by discussing the factors affecting gas behavior and isotope properties.

The tutor and student reviewed several concepts related to gas laws, including atmospheric pressure, unit conversions, Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution diagrams, and Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures. They practiced solving stoichiometry problems involving gas collection and decomposition reactions, focusing on calculations of moles, mass, and percentage yield. The next session will revisit these topics with more practice problems.

The tutor and student worked on balancing oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions in chemistry, practicing techniques for identifying oxidation states, writing and balancing half-reactions, and converting them into complete molecular equations. They reviewed the process through multiple examples and discussed how to distinguish redox reactions from other types of chemical reactions.

The student and tutor worked through problems related to chemical kinetics and redox reactions. They practiced calculating activation energy and the pre-exponential factor using the Arrhenius equation and then delved into the detailed steps of balancing complex redox reactions, including identifying oxidation states, writing half-reactions, and balancing ionic and molecular equations in acidic conditions. They planned to practice similar problems in a future session.

The Student and Tutor worked through problems related to oxidation-reduction reactions, Gibbs Free Energy and spontaneity, and chemical kinetics, including rate laws and the Arrhenius equation. They practiced balancing redox reactions, calculating thermodynamic values, and interpreting kinetic data from graphs. The Tutor plans to find more practice problems on balancing half-reactions for the next session.

The tutor and student worked through a practice exam covering topics in chemistry, including acid-base theory (Bronsted-Lowry), pH calculations, properties of explosives, oxidation states, redox reactions, entropy, thermodynamics (Gibbs Free Energy), kinetics (rate laws), and buffer systems. They practiced identifying conjugate pairs, calculating pH, predicting entropy changes, and understanding spontaneity. The next session is planned to finish the review and cover additional student-submitted questions.
