Hello and welcome! I'm Allie, a Canadian woman with wide-ranging tutoring experience. I have both a B.A. and an M.A. in English literature, and I have certification to teach English as a Second Language. I've taught across the spectrum; some of my favourite experiences include teaching four year old students to read, teaching recent immigrants to speak English, and privately tutoring high school and college students, helping them to write essays, understand works of literature, and prepare for year-end exams. I believe that learning should feel safe, engaging, informative, and fun. I have a genuinely interactive approach to teaching and learning. In my classes, the student will be prompted to do most of the talking, while I ask questions that help the student think differently and learn more easily. Outside of work, I'm a bookworm who reads about eighty books a year, a cat owner who loves her furry friend, and an avid photographer, cook, and baker. I'm trying very hard to learn to crochet. I'd love to help you learn.

My teaching style is student-centred; it is important to me that my students feel welcome, safe, and understood. I combine academic depth with emotional warmth. I have heaps of tutoring experience. I’ve taught small children how to read, I’ve been a university instructor in both an Introductory English literature class and a small group of students eager to learn Old English. Throughout my adult life I have privately tutored many, many private students, helping them write essays or preparing for exams, and guiding them through works of literature, helping them to comprehend the themes and characters of a novel, short story, or poem. In my spare time you’ll find me engrossed in books, working to become fluent in Spanish, cuddling with my dark grey cat, and struggling to learn to crochet.
