With experience tutoring English, Math, Chemistry, and Music, I pride myself on being a versatile instructor. Having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Technocultural Studies and a Minor in Professional Writing from University of California, Davis, I strive to maintain a welcoming and inclusive educational environment wherein my students can thrive! In addition to my time tutoring in all subjects with Study Smart Tutors during summer 2024 at Johnnie Cochran Middle and throughout the '24-25 school year at Helen Bernstein High School, I bring a wealth of real-world experience, having published over 60 articles of press coverage and music reviews for the San Diego-based blog Listen SD. I have additionally played music professionally for 13 years and have over 4 years of experience teaching Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboard, and Vocal lessons to students of all ages and abilities, including those with learning differences. My teaching approach is patient, thorough, and empathetic. I begin by assessing my students' needs and fundamental skills, seeing where we can build upon existing strength areas and shore up weaknesses. In English lessons, I specialize in creative writing, but I aim to help my students in a multitude of ways. Through the lens of their ongoing curriculum, we will expand our knowledge of grammar conventions, sharpen our vocabulary, and learn to think critically about each text we analyze, appreciating the importance of context clues and building dynamite study skills along the way. We will learn to pick apart and analyze the form and tone of a text, mastering standard essay formatting inside and out. After creating an initial draft and poring over it together, out focus will shift to editing where we will learn to transform the raw materials of a paper in progress into a polished finished work. In music lessons, I aim to get to the heart of my students' interests and goals so that we can learn how music theory works by learning songs they already love and will be self-motivated to practice. Choosing level-appropriate songs and exercises, we will work towards mastery in a range of techniques and genres, all while keeping our sights set on connecting with the true joy of music.
