About your guitar teacher
My name is Tom Poggi. I’m a passionate guitar teacher and lecturer with over 15 years of experience teaching and working as a professional musician. Over the years, my love for a wide range of musical genres has allowed me to perform and explore music from many different cultures. I have a deep understanding of various styles, including jazz, pop, country, Latin (Spanish and South American), metal, R&B, rock, folk, funk, classical (mainly Baroque and Romantic), and blues. I’ve taught students of all ages and skill levels—in nurseries, schools, colleges, and universities. Whether you're a complete beginner, an intermediate player, or an advanced guitarist—or even a child just learning how to hold a guitar—I’d love to support you on your musical journey. I can help you master chords, scales, rhythms, and techniques, and work with you to achieve your personal goals. To inform my teaching practice, I hold two postgraduate teaching qualifications. Throughout my career, I’ve also worked in the music industry as a commercial songwriter and an international touring musician. As an empathetic tutor, I always strive to create a supportive and encouraging environment. I want every student to feel confident in their abilities and enjoy the process of learning and growing as a musician.

Guitar lessons overview
I provide personalised tutoring tailored to your individual needs and goals. I’m confident in integrating sight-reading, creativity, empathy, music theory, and technical development into my lessons. With many years of experience teaching online, I use platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and interactive guitar apps alongside traditional methods to deliver engaging and effective lessons. I’ve taught thousands of students in both one-to-one settings and large group environments—sometimes with up to 100 students per class or assembly. My teaching approach is grounded in kinaesthetic-tactile methods, supporting a wide range of learning needs. I incorporate constructivist theories and effective memorisation techniques to help students reflect, retain information, and learn quickly. Above all, I want my students to progress rapidly and enjoy the process of learning music.
