In the realm of college admissions, standardised tests have long been considered as a typical measure of academic potential. However, my personal journey through education has revealed the limitations of these tests in capturing the true breadth of individual capabilities.

Growing up in Nigeria, the equivalent of the SAT in my country is the West African Examination Council (WAEC). Like many high school seniors, I diligently prepared for the WAEC, devoting countless hours to studying and mastering the requisite subjects. However, despite my efforts, I found myself grappling with feelings of inadequacy as I awaited my results. While I had performed adequately in subjects like geography, mathematics, English, physics and chemistry, I couldn’t shake the nagging doubt that these grades did not truly reflect my potential.

It wasn’t until I got into the university that I truly began to discover my abilities. Immersed in an environment that valued research, critical thinking, and practical application, I found a passion for interdisciplinary learning, blending science and technology with social and cultural understanding.

One defining moment occurred during a research project in my 300 Level. I was tasked with tackling a complex problem in integrated farming systems and sustainable beef production. Initially overwhelmed by the task’s scope, I soon discovered a passion for research and a thirst for learning. Collaborating with peers and mentors, I developed innovative solutions that earned recognition within the university community.

Drawing from this experience, my final year research project on socioeconomic factors’ impact on students’ eating habits felt like a breeze. I had honed the necessary skills through practical experience, not just test-taking. My solutions benefited the university community immensely.

Reflecting on my experiences, I realised that potential extends beyond test scores. The university environment provided fertile ground for growth and self-discovery, allowing me to cultivate skills beyond exam performance.

My journey has taught me that potential is not static or predetermined but is rather a dynamic process of continual growth and development. True potential encompasses not only cognitive abilities but also emotional intelligence, resilience, adaptability, and a passion for lifelong learning.

While standardised tests like WAEC and SAT play a role in admissions into universities, they’re just one piece of the puzzle. As we strive to create a more equitable and inclusive educational system, let us remember that true potential knows no bounds and flourishes in the fertile soil of creativity, authenticity, curiosity, and perseverance.
